The Lift Curation Team/Exhibition Space Visit

Curating the Lift space;

TEAM : Kensa, David, Jess, Sophie, Lance and Didge
Important curatorial decisions we made were.
  1. Keep all the work in the one area around the stairwell, inside the double doors. We were offered the glass cabinets opposite the ladies toilets, the wall next to the canteen outside the double doors and the screen inside the canteen which we declined.
  2. We asked if everything could be moved out of the exhibiting space; land camera, rubber plant etc We agreed to take the camera into the foyer at Studio 11.
  3. Health and safety, wheelchair access and keeping access walkways clear were a main concern and we used masking tape to highlight the available floor space.
  4. We decided to make a location plan by choosing where the larger objects and paintings could go. The rubber tyre tower, (which also needed a socket,) Lance's large print, (which needed to be viewed from afar,) David's performance area which includes a mirror, microphone and chair. He also made  a request that the performance area be near to the rubber tower and Sam's request that the video piece be opposite the lift.
  5. We then worked through the list picking out the most appropriate pieces of work for the different areas. We used post it notes as position indicators. It was also decided that this job would be more successful if the work were in front of us.
  6. Securing TVs, screens, monitors etc and where to put them is going to be a challenge. We also have a limited supply of sockets. A number of different ideas were expressed which I could list but it would be to long so until we know exactly what people have managed to organise this will have to wait until closer the time.
We went back to the studio to discuss putting together an email of instructions, a plan of action and a few deadlines that will be sent out via Steven and Neil to the other exhibiting artists.
A large sheet of A1 was prepared with installation time slots between 11am and 3pm on Friday 2nd March and important information which was pinned to the 2nd year notice board.

Jess's email based on our discussion back in the studio.

Hi all,

A few important notes about the Lift Gallery install on Friday March 2;
Firstly, it is important that you email Neil and Steven by 4pm on Tuesday 28th with the following information about your work:
Dimensions
Materials (E.g. Wall-based imagery, video projector etc.)
We would like to remind you that it is your responsibility to book out/acquire any equipment that you need, and encourage you to do this ASAP. Remember that any equipment borrowed from the ERC needs to be taken out for three weeks, as this is the duration of our time in the Lift Gallery. It is also important that any valuable equipment is secured- I believe locks are available from the ERC.
We will be producing a piece of literature to accompany the show in the gallery, and would like to include a short statement from everyone about their piece. This can be between 10-100 words, describing your work and your intentions. We will need this to be sent to Neil and Steven by 4pm on Wednesday 29th February.
On the day of the install, Friday March 2nd, you will all need to drop off your work in the Lift space between 9-10am. Unless you have a very valid reason as to why you are unable to, failure to do so will result in non-inclusion in the show.
And finally! You will see on the notice board in Studio 11 that there is now a sign-up sheet for the Lift Gallery installation. Because it is a small space, we have arranged 20 minute slots for you to come in and set up your work, with three people per 20 minutes. Please sign up to get the time you want- it’s first come, first served!
Many thanks!
The Curatorial team.

    1. You can say that again! Thought I'd be home at midday but just couldn't resist the chance to get stuck in.
